I’ve learned this over the years.  Essentially it comes down to – you get what you focus on.  If you treat everyone and everything with little care, that is what you will receive back.  And a lot of the time, magnified.

If you are in business and treat it like a hobby, it will treat you like a hobby back.  When playing sport, if you don’t practise or take it seriously, how will you ever improve?  I’m a huge believer in play hard or go home.  Give it 110% or just don’t show up.  There is something in giving something your all.

The feelings I get when I know I’ve done everything I can to something, it goes way beyond simple satisfaction.  Even menial tasks.  Let’s face it, if you don’t wash your clothes properly, you’ll look a little silly walking around in jeans or jumpers covered in stains wouldn’t you?  It’s always another interesting social study for me just observing people.  How they present themselves, what they wear, what sort of car they drive and what is the condition of the car.  Where they live and how well kept are the gardens.  It’s not about judgement at all in any context.  It’s all about self-respect and treating everything with care.  Believe me, if you don’t treat your current house or car or even self with respect, how you can expect to receive more and/or better than you currently have???  It’s just not going to happen I’m afraid.

You wouldn’t turn up to a car dealer with a bomb expecting to get thousands of dollars off a new car?  That’s just nuts – what’s the dealer going to do with a bomb – what’s in it for him?  Same with selling a house.  If it’s filthy and the garden is a haven for snipers, then you won’t get the maximum price that you might get if it was manicured and beautifully polished and clean and neat and tidy.  It makes sense right?

So why not adopt that philosophy to every aspect of your life.  Start with the little stuff, like doing dishes, mopping the floor, washing the car, mowing the lawn, pulling out weeds.  Mundane stuff that maybe you don’t necessarily like but the lesson will be invaluable and over time can quite literally pay you back thousands of dollars.  I’m not kidding.  Sometimes simple adjustments are all that’s needed.  At work, put your hand up for extra tasks, work back once in a while, go above and beyond.  Your boss will notice and reward you accordingly.  It will be worth it, especially over the longer term.

Once you truly learn the benefit of focus and being the best that you can be, it will teach you how to create more in your life.  Try it.  Even if it’s just for a week.  And let me know what you find.  I bet just the feelings it gives you will be worth the little extra effort.  Do your hair nice for a week.  Wear nice clothes.  Clean your car out completely, give it a wash and vacuum.  Neaten up your front yard.  It will build self-esteem and confidence like you would not believe not to mention attracting more of the stuff you really want.  Have fun with this!
