Confused?  Think I’ve lost the plot?  Well, no I haven’t and allow me to explain.

Many years ago – actually just over 10 – I started out in the company that I am now with.  Now at that time I was taught to purely bring in business builders.  So I did.  A lot.  Very quickly.  In many different countries.  I ONLY spent time with the ones who came in at the top package level as I thought they demonstrated solid commitment so they were deserving of my time.  And my business grew very, very quickly.  5 months in and I was half way up the ladder of their pay plan.  I was put up in the Junior Suite at the local Hilton Hotel for an event.  My ticket to that event was paid for by the company.  I had reps there with me.  I was pinned on stage by the Founders of the company.  I thought I had made it.  Life was good and I was completely fulfilled.  I still remember getting my first big cheque and my Senior Business Partners calling me up late at night to congratulate me on hitting the major milestone.  I had no idea what it meant – I was just building my business.

But you know what happened.  Month 6 came and people started quitting.  So I went into what a lot of you will no doubt recognize as “Management Mode”.  I stopped recruiting and started spending time “managing” my leadership group.  And one by one over the course of around a year, I watched them all slowly disappear until I was left with a handful of not really active reps.  I was left wondering what the heck went wrong.  I’d built several levels deep – I had people in my group I had never heard of, never met.  It was just so thrilling for me and yet at this point completely mystifying as to what had actually happened.

So recently, with the help of my new Senior Business Partner (it’s a very long story), he helped me to see what happened and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again.  You see, there is no longevity in building your business purely with business builders.  And why is that?  It’s because these people are only committed to one thing – earning money.  They only come into your business to do it and unless they make big bucks fast, they’re out.  They are only loyal and committed and dedicated to the almighty dollar.  And that is not what our business is all about.

To succeed in our industry, and I would argue in probably any industry, you need to be dedicated, committed and loyal to people and what outcomes they want.  Build relationships and work out what it is that drives people.  What you will find is that in most cases it isn’t cash – it’s what the cash will do.  Your product invariably changes people lives, so start there.  Find people who will fall in love with your product first and foremost and you will build a massive residual income.  My current Senior Business Partner has done exactly that.  He has pretty much retired from actively building his business – he has several thousand in product sales going through his business on Autoship every single month.  He now lives in an inner city apartment with his wife and does what he wants.  He has NOT recruited the big kickass business builders.  He’s build a massive group of product lovers.

So I hope this has dispelled the myth that in order to retire on a massive residual income you need to recruit aggressive business builders, because it is simply not true.  My business was built in this way and built on a house of cards.  It all eventually fell because they weren’t loyal to me nor the product line.  And that was because I did not learn enough about them, what made them tick and what they truly wanted to achieve from their businesses.  Many times, it won’t be what you think.  So stop running those “earn money from home” ads.  They don’t work in the long term.
