Week 5 of our 10 week Bootcamp on the basics of your network marketing business – hope you’re getting good value so far. We’re already half way through – where did that time go!? So today I’ll be covering off on keeping in touch with your upline daily.

You might not have a great relationship with your upline and that is totally fine. Keep going up until you find someone you do like to work with. Just because you signed up with someone, doesn’t guarantee you either like that person or get along. It’s not a big deal. But ALWAYS get their permission to go over their head before you start approaching their upline etc. Just manners really.

Why is it necessary to stay in touch daily I hear you asking? Well, there are many reasons. Here’s my top 5:

  1. Leaders stay in touch.  How on earth is it possible for your upline to know how to identify who the leaders are in their team if they don’t hear from anyone?  It’s all well and good to look at your month end reports, but they only tell part of the story.  Your upline really doesn’t know where you are at if they don’t hear from you.  Seeing your organizational volume doesn’t really demonstrate to your upline that you are actively building your business, what your challenges are, what you need support around etc.  The only way to know that, is to communicate.  And daily.
  2. Your upline is your support – they know best how to support you.  But again, if you don’t ask, how can they best support you.  Not cross line or downline.  Only your upline has walked your path before – even if they have been in the business a month longer than you.  They understand your journey.
  3. You are in this business for the long haul I hope.  How do you ensure you are building a strong business relationship – communication!  It’s impossible to procure any relationships anywhere in fact if there is no communication.  And relationships are always a two way street.
  4. Stay on top of the latest company information.  If your upline is a good strong company leader, they will be sharing the latest trainings and promotions with you.  Again, if you are missing out on any information, you probably need to start searching for someone who is active further upline.  In some cases, promotions can be time sensitive so it’s important to be informed the moment they are released.  A good leader will do this so it’s important to maintain those strong connections so you don’t miss anything.
  5. Your relationship with your upline is a training ground for how you will relate with and to your downline.  If your upline a dictatorial, chances are you will follow suit and that simply won’t work in building a large, solid organization.  Most people that come into this industry are pretty good at playing follow the leader as most have come from jobs.  Not always, but mostly.  If your upline is duplicating strongly, then clearly you want to learn from that and duplicate down.  Obviously adding your own personality and flavour into the mix.  Most people watch everything their upline is doing so they can copy.  Make sure you are demonstrating yourself to be a strong leader if your upline is.  This is part of the duplication process.

Let’s be honest, things can change daily and sometimes even hourly in business. People quit. Companies release promotions that are time-sensitive. Someone in your team who hasn’t been doing anything for months’ all of a sudden has three new team members. If you don’t have someone you can regularly ask questions of and share the ups and downs of your business journey, statistics show us that most people will quit. Your relationship with your upline is part of your foundation in business. It will either work really well for you and duplicate down or it will not. There isn’t really much middle ground here. But as with all relationships, it starts with you. Let your upline know you want to be in touch daily. Ask them by what medium (ie Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, Messenger, e-mail). They want to share in your journey as much as you do. Obviously they want to see you succeed and they understand they are a part of that success so it’s in their best interests after all to be the best support system that they can be. Have fun in getting to know your upline better and sharing in that journey together.
